Origin

I write the standards that organizations use to drive sustainability.

I'm Joel Carboni. I have been working on the responsibility I first learned as a young Boy Scout in the 1980s, in increasingly serious settings, ever since.

Origin

This didn't begin in a boardroom. It began with a life preserver.

My commitment to sustainability did not begin in a boardroom. It began in the early 1980s, in a Boy Scouts of America program called Project SOAR, Save Our American Resources. The program emblem was a life preserver carrying four symbols for the elements that make life possible on Earth, surrounded by arrows showing how each one depends on the others.

Championed nationally by President Ronald Reagan, who had chaired the program as Governor of California, SOAR taught a generation of scouts that conservation was not a side activity. It was the responsibility itself. That lesson stayed with me through every job, every credential, every framework I have built since.

The work has grown larger and more technical. The principle has not changed.

The stakes

The way we plan and run projects is either accelerating our crises or pulling us back from the edge.

There is no neutral setting.

The filter

If an idea cannot survive contact with a real project team under pressure, I am not interested.
